In any discussion of contemporary calligraphy history, Yu You-ren (1879-1964) is a prominent personage who cannot be overlooked. Yu’s calligraphy development is roughly divided into three stages over the course of his life, namely his modelbook studies calligraphy, stele studies, and cursive script (caoshu, also known as “grass script”). His studies of scripts used on steles and studies of cursive script are his extraordinary achievements and of significance in modern times. Past researches tend to focus on the developments of stele studies and cursive script from the perspective of calligraphic history, while ignoring the other implications of these two significant transformations in Yu’s calligraphic styles. Yu’s active discarding of modelbooks in favor of steles and the emergence of stele studies during the mid Qing dynasty are different in nature. Yu’s transformation of styles sees a strong revolutionary consciousness devoted to the overthrow of the Manchurian Qing dynasty. Ultimately Yu not only did away with the traditional modelbook learning adopted in his own early years, but also went so far as to correct the mistakes of stele studies. As for Yu’s standardizing of cursive script, he had a practical goal of saving his nation. In addition to that, he also considered and dealt with the issues and work relating to the modernization of cursive calligraphy during the process. With regard to his own calligraphy, it was through abandoning traditional modes of brushwork that Yu developed unique linework functionally suited to standardized calligraphy. Thus, the cursive script was transformed into a contemporary calligraphic script as it completed the process of modernization with standardized cursive script.
