French artist Jean-Jacques Grandville was celebrated for his political caricatures and literary illustrations in the July Monarchy. In his brief and tragic lifetime, he created a wealth of astonishing images that elicited admiration, criticism, and various interpretations. This paper focuses on his major work Un autre monde (1843-1844) which uses caricature and fantastic metamorphosis as artistic languages to illuminate the contemporaneous social condition and Romantic view of natural history. Its narrative content and stylistic traits of wood-engravings will first be analyzed and then placed in the context of travel literature and “animalomanie” flourishing at the time in order to elucidate the milieu of its production. The hybrid imagery crafted in the manner of comic grotesque subverts the positivist epistemology and classification, and emanates a strong dynamic of anthropomorphism. Metamorphosis brings about borderland identities between the human and non-human. This illustrated book is associated with Fourierist socialism and reveals an anxiety about the commodification and mechanization of culture. As a work of critical irrealism, Un autre monde articulates a sophisticated response to the decline of socialism and the growth of capitalist culture.
