根據郭店竹簡及對《中庸》的分析，今本《中庸》應包括兩個部分，第二章至第二十章上半部分即是子思所作的《中庸》，第一章及第二十章下半部分以下，應為子思的另一篇作品《誠明》。這兩個部分在文體、思想上存在較大差別，其中《誠明》主要影響了孟子，而《中庸》則影響到荀子，它們被編在一起，乃是以後的事情。

According to the Guodian texts and analysis of the Zhongyong, today's Zhongyong text can be divided into two parts: Chapter 2 to the first half of chapter 20 form the original Zhongyong, traditionally attributed to Zisi, while chapter 1 and the second half of chapter 20 to the end of the received text probably belong to a second work of Zisi's, which can be called "Chengming. " The two parts exhibit differences in style and thought; the "Chengming" probably ha d a greater influence on Mencius, and the Zhongyong a greater influence on Xunzi. The two halves were most likely combined to form a single text only long after they were composed.
